Nine Months

If I had published this post on Monday when I started it, it would have been yet a third month-post saying that Henry was so close to crawling.  He must have woken up on his nine-month birthday feeling very mature and developed, because he picked that morning to finally start crawling!  Of course I went into work early, so I missed it, but Karl reported that he put Henry on the ground at Ravi's, and the kid was so excited when Elaine got there that he took off on his hands and knees and went six feet without even realizing it.

In addition to crawling, he's pulling up on the furniture and starting to taking little sideways steps along the edge of the coffee table.  That skill seemed to develop very quickly -- a week ago, it was a struggle for him to get up, and now he can get to his feet easily, let go with one hand to play with something, or lean against the table and let go with both hands, and then lower himself back to sitting with some semblance of control.  We thought that he might grow more cautious as he gained greater mobility, but he remains totally fearless.  This morning, in fact, he suffered his first real boo-boo when he tried to launch himself off of our bed and clocked his face on the nightstand.  I was standing right there but didn't move fast enough.  Mommy fail.

He now eats most of the foods that we eat at dinner, which we both consider a major upgrade from mush, and still prefers meat and vegetables to fruit.  I have been regularly amazed at the things he will eat -- the other day we had pasta in shallot cream sauce with asparagus and he gobbled up bites of both pasta and asparagus.  Rather sophisticated palate for someone who still drools on himself.  Other favorites include zucchini and cheese.

I'm enjoying this month a lot.  The cuteness remains almost overwhelming but some things are a little easier -- now that he can get around better on his own, he squawks less when I put him down, plus not everything immediately goes in his mouth anymore.  Henry has invented some fun little routines all on his own, like when Karl hands him up to me after the bath, I wrap him in the towel, then he arches backwards to smile upside-down at Karl and they "hi-five" about twelve times.  Love those guys.
