Six Months

Our little love bug has already reached her half-birthday!  Everything goes faster the second time around -- and it didn't exactly go slowly the first time.

Ingrid continues to be the cuddliest kid around.  Henry would (and will) tolerate being cuddled in the course of some other quiet-time activity, like nursing or reading stories, but generally didn't want to be snuzzled for no reason.  Ingrid, on the other hand, agrees with me that baby-snuzzling is an activity in and of itself and would happily let me nom-nom-nom on her cheeks and kiss her belly all day.  Incidentally, her cheeks are the softest, most pillowy things I've ever encountered.  She has been waking up about at hour earlier than Henry, and I delight in cuddling up in bed and enjoying her squishy baby self while the house is quiet.

She is in a very cute phase where she can sit up and play with toys and grin at the whole world.  The easiest way to make her smile is to just smile at her.   She loves empty Play-Doh cups, Sophie, the giraffe head from a wooden stacking toy, star on a stick, toys with jingly noises, the stacking blocks and balls, spoons, and spatulas.

from a friend in my 30-day challenge.

Even though she can sit up indefinitely, she still can't roll over.  I guess she decided to just skip that step.  Silly baby.  Now that she can sit up, she has no interest in being down on her tummy, so she hasn't made much progress toward crawling.  I'm in no hurry for her to be mobile -- it's hard enough keeping track of Henry.  It's also nice that I can set her up for photo opportunities and she can't run away.

She is still a very vocal lady and is just starting to babble with almost-consonant sounds.  She does it entirely with her lower gums, which (much to our surprise) still have no sign of teeth, despite the river of drool she has been producing for two full months.  She also makes this great noise like a creaky door, but I can never get her to do it when the camera is on.

Separation anxiety has seriously set in.  Ingrid wails if I so much as turn my back to her and start to walk across the room, so she spends a loooooot of time in the Ergo.  A month ago Elaine visited and Ingrid was all, "Well, hello, you look friendly!  Would you like to hold me and make eye contact?"  Elaine came by again this week and got this face if she so much as touched the baby.

She is sleeping through the night pretty reliably.  I finally got tired of waking up in the night and let her cry it out a couple of weeks ago.  Just like the bedtime training, it took her all of three days to figure it out.  She still squeaks and complains at night sometimes, but she gets herself back to sleep quickly.  Her daytime naps are hit or miss.  Sometimes it's three short naps, sometimes two long naps, sometimes two short naps and a long day for Mommy.  Overall, it seems like she isn't a naturally great sleeper like Henry, but can function pleasantly even if she doesn't get enough sleep; whereas Henry was a great sleeper from the start, but woe unto everyone if he doesn't get all the sleep he needs -- which is to say that Ingrid is just like Karl and Henry is just like me.

We're starting to get a sense of her personality, but it's funny that we don't really know what she will look like.  Henry at six months looked only vaguely like his toddler self.  I'm sure I will enjoy watching Ingrid grow and change -- but would it be so terrible if she looked like this forever?
