Eighteen Months

A quick 18-month update on the heels of our trip to the cabin, which gave me major deja vu of Henry at the cabin at the same age.

Heidi is for sure entering the age of peak physical cuteness.  When she gives us giant grins or wriggles with glee or cruises around on her tiptoes it's so cute I can hardly stand it.  I have to brace myself for the fact that (if she follows the Ingrid plan) she is going to continue getting cuter for a solid year.

When she wants something, she just repeats the word with increasing intensity until we get it for her.  If she wants her vitamin it's bumbai. Bumbai! Bumbai! Bumbai!!! BUMBAIBUMBAIBUMBAIBUMBAI!!!!!!  It's impossible to put her off.  Sometimes rather annoying, but highly effective.

She is frighteningly brave in the water.  We click her into her vest at the pool and she dives right in and kicks around like a little fish.  I took all three to our splash park the other day.  It has those fountains that spray up unpredictably.  I thought she would freak out when the big ones blasted her in the face but, no, IT WAS AWESOME.  She just stood over them with her hands out waiting for the splashy-splashy to come back.

Some of her favorite things right now:
  • Books -- the animals book, poems (especially the Henry poems and Daddy Fell Into the Pond), Caps for Sale, I Want My Hat Back, A Ball for Daisy
  • Toys -- whatever Ingrid is playing with, baby dolls, blocks, the play kitchen and pretend food, balls, sitting on the big kids' scooters/bikes.
  • Games -- tickle and "get you" (she doesn't even try to get away), swimming, bubbles
She talks nonstop and is now putting two words together easily.  When we're talking about something, she now makes associative leaps to related words, so I know she isn't just parroting what we say.  When we were at the cabin, I would say, "Ready to go to the lake?" and she might respond, "Swimmin' down-tairs."  She came home with a host of new vacation-related words: lake, kayak, gnome, hammock, boat, birdie, fishie.

She has also picked up a lot of useful third-child words: mine, turn, and [sibling] took.  It's going to be a hard transition for her when the other kids go back to school next week.  She hates it when they do things without her.  Serious FOMO, this kid.  But I'm looking forward to having our quiet mornings together again if she'll tolerate them.
