First Day of School (and a new bed)

It's back to school time!  After twenty years of schooling, I still love the excitement of a new year.

Henry started yesterday.  He didn't seem nervous and we weren't really nervous for him.  His teacher seems enthusiastic but fairly strict, which should be a fine fit for him.  Henry was sad that neither of his best friends ended up in his class but there were several other kids he liked, so I think that'll be okay.  He was excited to get a locker and seems to be feeling like a much bigger kid on campus.  An old pro at the ripe age of six.
No one takes a photo without a Heidi

This tiny adorable kidergator started today.  I can't believe Ingrid is in kindergarten.  Sure, she's already been in some kind of school for three years.  I just can't believe she's old enough for the big leagues, going off into the world (mostly) alone, not even having me hand her off to a teacher at a classroom door.  She was supposed to be 2.5 forever.

We had a conference yesterday so we could chat with her teacher and Ingrid could explore the classroom, which was great.  Ingrid and Heidi spent twenty minutes in the play kitchen while we told her teacher that she will be super agreeable in the classroom but will not learn to read (or do anything else) until she damn well feels like it.  We just want her to enjoy school this year.  And she wants all the cuddles.  Mrs. B seemed very simpatico with all that.  I think she'll have a great year.

Henry put on a good show of saying he didn't want to chaperone his little sister, but when the moment came, he walked her onto the bus and sat down next to her instead of with his friends.  And then he made sure she found her teacher at school and got on the right bus at the end of the day.  What a kid.

She was super cheery when she got off the bus today.  Her two besties next door get home earlier so they waited for her at the bus.

Not one to be left out, Heidi decided yesterday she was ready for her big-girl bed.  We had been putting it off because she was sleeping so awesomely and we don't like to fix what ain't broken.  But I think she got caught up in everyone doing new things and wanted to make the leap.  We switched Henry and Ingrid into new bunks and Heidi inherited the bunk with the railings that all the kids have started with.  She wanted it purple, so purple it was!  Also featuring super adorable quilt I found at a vintage shop and hand-embroidered pillowcases from my great-grandmother.

Who told these kids they could grow up so fast?
