Thirteen Months

Just a few updates at thirteen months for our now-officially-a-toddler:

Fritz started walking just like he stopped nursing: he made a decision one day and stuck with it.  The babysitter was here on Wednesday and Friday two weeks ago (an unprecedented level of child care for the last five years!) and was amazed to find that Fritz had completely converted to bipedalism on Thursday.  He got some cool new winter kicks so he can tromp in the snow with the other kids.  Watching him walk in them is hilarious; it's like the one time we put dog boots on Izzy.

He now loves balls, toothbrushes, reading stories, and the Dyson.  We could read and play catch and vacuum all day long and he would be happy.  He steals all the toothbrushes and we find them all over the place.  Fritz also loves climbing the stairs and is the first kid to teach himself to go down safely backwards.  He's also the first kid to love toilets and sometimes we find things that should NOT be there (see e.g. toothbrushes).  I really did not understand why people needed toilet lid latches until now.

He still doesn't have any clear words.  I realize this is normal and all the other kids have just talked freakishly early.  But I am slightly concerned that he doesn't mimic sounds, except on rare occasions when Henry really works at him, and the almost-words he had two months ago have disappeared.  I'll ask the pediatrician when we go for Heidi's checkup.

The conversion to one nap is complete and we have a nice routine going.  He dozes if we're in the car at all in the morning, but as long as it's less than 20 minutes, he still goes down easily.  Putting him to bed is a dream.  He still loves his sleep suit and his bottle.

My precioussssss

Now that he can walk, he's part of the pack more and more each day.  He wants to do what the other kids do and gets tragically sad when they leave him behind.  Heidi still adores him but now gets annoyed when he messes up whatever she's working on.  If only I had a nickel for every time I heard, "Moooooom, can you get Fritz?"  But Henry will play with him almost endlessly and Ingrid will occasionally bring him into her world.  Fritz is going to have a blast this summer when he can chase them around the park and the pool.
