Seventeen Months

This winter baby is a full-fledged summer-loving toddler.  She wakes up in the morning and (after inquiring after the whereabouts of everyone in the family) demands, "Outside!"  And then asks if we're going swimming or splashy-splashy.  As soon as she demolishes her lumberjack breakfast, she's ready to spend every waking moment being wild outdoors.

Heidi still has no sense of self-preservation.  Today we went for a hike and she would have jumped headlong off every bridge or riverbank.  She goes flying into the pool (in her floaty vest) without hesitation.  She invented her very own bathtub game: How Much Of My Face Can I Put Underwater And Still Breathe?  Most daring feats are accompanied by her signature maniacal cackle.  I'm afraid for her college years.

She loves, loves, loves her big siblings.  For the most part, they dish it right back and she struts around with all the confidence of a much-adored baby of the family.  She also believes she is five years old and can do anything Henry and Ingrid can do.  Henry is very watchful of her and carries her out of harm's way a lot, which she finds hilarious.  It might actually be encouraging her to be reckless as often as possible.

She had a really fun month of spending time with the grandparents.  We spent a week at the beach with Grandma Jane and Grandpa Alan.  She called them Grandma and Grandma (not that there's anything wrong with that.)  Then Grandma Carol and Grandpa Dave came to DC for a few days and did a solo day with the kids while Karl and I went off to act like adults.  Heidi was a big fan of adoring grandparents.  She still asks for Grandma when she wakes up in the morning.

She talks all the time and will repeat the last word of every sentence we say to her.  She's just on the verge of putting two-word phrases together.  She often uses two related words with just a half a beat in between.  Gobs of new words this month -- so many I can't keep track of them.  Lots of awesome vacation-related words.

Cooo - cold
Ca-cuh - cracker
Po - open

The big kids also think it's hilarious to teach her "bad" words.  They ride around in the back of the car yelling "butt!" "fart!" "penis!" and giving her time to parrot it back.  Good influences, those kids.

It's fun to see her develop a sense of humor.  She has the most over-dramatic sad face, but she usually wants to be made happy, so we started making the sad lip back at her.  Now it's become a joke, and she'll pretend to be sad about something and throw the fake sad lip.  Adorable.

Putting her to bed is still the best.  We read a few stories before she rolls over and snuggles against my chest.  I'm afraid her cuddly solo bedtime is coming to an end as she wants to be with older kids until the very last minute, but I'm hanging on as long as I can.
