Fifteen Months

Like I said, we had a great 27 days of January.  It was another month where Henry changed quite a bit and learned a lot of new things.  It seems like his good moods coincide with these leaps, probably because they open up new things for him to do and new ways to communicate, which not only makes life more fun but also prevents frustration.

He understands more and more of what we're saying and reacts well if we tell him the same things over and over again so he can figure out what's going on.  LOTS of new words this month:
  • EEE-SHEE -- Izzy.  Pronounced very deliberately, and always with an underbite.
  • RavRav -- Ravi
  • A-da -- all done
  • Gacka -- cracker
  • Hat
  • Hot -- he say it even when an object is not hot, but he clearly understands that something might happen when he puts his hand on it
  • Eye
  • Up
  • Mama -- has replaced "Mum" as my name
  • Boo -- wants to play peekaboo
  • Buuuuh -- book
  • Uh-oh -- frequently used.  We're trying to explain to him the difference between a real "uh-oh" and a "you just intentionally chucked that container of yogurt across the room."
  • Naah naah -- night night.
I took practically no pictures this month, but we're trying hard to capture some of his favorite words on video because the toddler diction and expressions are just so cute.

He is much more independent this month and is starting to want to do things himself.  Elaine somehow magically taught him to blow his nose (he's surprisingly effective) but he will only do it if he holds the kleenex himself, so we are largely relieved of snot duty.  He finally learned to go down stairs and dismount furniture by himself in a more-or-less sensible feet-first fashion.  He likes to be a helper and will carry items back and forth between us, put his dirty clothes in the hamper, and his diaper in the trash.  If he is pissed off about something, we can often distract him by giving him a task to perform.  I intend to mercilessly exploit this until he catches on.

This month marked the beginning of his active interest in books.  Before he would just tolerate the fact that we were reading but didn't seem to understand we were doing it for his benefit.  Now we spend quite a bit of time before bed in his room enjoying the baby library.  He brings us book after book from his shelf and assigns them to a particular reader, sometimes switching between us every few pages.  Karl dominates at Goodnight Moon, and I am generally responsible for narrating the animal picture book.  I usually sit in his rocking chair and sometimes he comes and pushes on my leg until I get up so that he can climb into the chair by himself.  I continue reading from the floor like the good royal subject that I am.

The only downside this month is that he doesn't want to cuddle me at night anymore.  He finishes his bottle, tells me "a-da," then points at the crib and says "naah naah."  All attempts and snuggling and rocking are met with more insistent pointing and naah-naahing.  Sigh.  Fifteen months and already too much of a big boy to cuddle with his mom.
