A Holiday Marathon Post

I popped my camera card in the computer to pull my Christmas pictures and realized the Thanksgiving pictures were still on there.  Oops.

First up, Thanksgivukkah!  We hosted Karl's parents, my parents, and one random family friend for Thanksgiving dinner, which was a pretty small crowd compared to some previous years.  Karl told me I could only make three pies.  We finished the traditional turkey dinner with some menorah-lighting, celebrating the Hulk's victory over the Seleucids.

We set up the Christmas tree and attempted to take family photos for our Christmas card.  The kids were super cute but not remotely card-like.  We had to have a friend come over and take a new one.

We broke out the Christmas jammies and let the kids watch the Grinch eleven million times.

We also make two trips down to the Botanical Gardens to see the trains display.  In a surprise move, Ingrid was the one to be super excited every time Thomas came around.   We also took advantage of one unusually warm day to visit the big Christmas tree by the Capitol.  The Capitol Police officer loved that Henry arrived in costume and asked to take a picture with him.  I'm not sure which of them was more excited.

A three short weeks of frantic shopping later, we headed to Minnesota.  The kids were really good on the flight out and we got lots of smiles from strangers.  That would not be the case on the flight home.

We had an unusually leisurely visit to Minnesota with enough time to see some friends and do lots of cold-weather activities.  Henry tried ice skating (I also *tried* ice skating) and was a rock star at sledding.  He also played a lot of hockey in the halls of Dave and Carol's building.  Ingrid is ready to retire to Florida with me, but she was a pretty good sport about sledding.

We staged Christmas morning on Christmas Eve because we had to fly home on the 25th.  Henry totally bought into the Santa thing this year, so we set out cookies and carrots and he dictated a note to Santa.  The kids got lots of great presents and then had a blast at the Schrader family party.  Henry tore it up with the three big boys and Ingrid decided parties are superfuntastic after all.

We flew home on Christmas.  The poor guy who sat in front of me and Ingrid is probably still recovering from the experience.

Karl had to race back to work on Thursday and Friday, so we waited until the weekend to have our own little family Christmas.   Santa brought a giant box of beads for Ingrid and some superhero books and games for Henry, all of which have been well-loved for the last month.

One week and one snowstorm later, Grandma Jane and Grandpa Alan arrived.  Henry got a scooter that he loves but hasn't been able to ride much because we've had so much ice.  He also got this super cool kiddie DSLR (just like Mommy's!) that the boys all fight over at the park.  Ingrid loves her pink chair because, unlike her brother, she does occasionally sit still.  And goldshoes.  The girl loves goldshoes.

They were also here for the bonus holiday: Karl's birthday!  We got him the manliest cake we could find.  No, really.  Slim pickings for ice cream cakes in January.

When it was time for Grandma and Grandpa to go, we drove to the airport and opened the van doors so they could hop out and Uncle Matt could hop right in.  This was the first time he's been here since last Thanksgiving.  Henry was very excited to have someone around who likes superheroes as much as he does.  Matt even brought his own super suit.

And that's a wrap!  A run-on post to go with a run-on holiday.  It's always so nice to celebrate the holidays with friends and family, especially now that the kids enjoy the festivities.  Wishing you all a happy and healthy 2014!
