Ingrid's First Day

Ingrid started big-girl school today!  I can't believe this sweet baby child is going off into the world all day.

I was initially worried about her teacher assignment.  I had only had one interaction with her -- way back when we were visiting schools for Henry's lottery application -- and it was not a positive experience.  But Jackie and others had good things to say about her so I didn't try to change it.  I've now met several other parents from her class and the word on the street is that Sherri is very strict, runs a very orderly classroom, but is affectionate and warm with the kids.  She probably would have been a disaster with Henry, but it might be the perfect environment for Ingrid, who just wants to work quietly by herself and occasionally cuddle someone.  And Sherri focuses heavily on reading skills.  So yeah, she and Ingrid will be fine together.

I let Ingrid decide what to do on Tuesday, our last "date" day before school started.  She opted for the zoo (for like the eleventh time in the last month).  We went wild and bought unlimited passes for the carousel, rode it four times, then visited her favorite frogs, crocodiles, and gorillas.

Then she requested Shake Shack for her back-to-school dinner.  Milkshakes and fries are essential to academic achievement.

For her first day, she wanted to wear her beloved cupcakes dress and new spots sneakers.  She was a little touchy in the morning while we were getting ready.  Then we had 45 minutes to kill after we dropped off Henry and she started crying a lot.  Everything was tragic and she started wailing that she wanted to go home.  But we took a walk to get some milk and she calmed down.  When we got to her classroom, everyone was busily working.  Her teacher came to the door, whisked her off to work on some cards with a group of kids, and that was that.  No tears at the door.

The house was awfully lonely without her this morning.  We had a nice morning routine -- drop off Henry, put Heidi to bed, open the curtains, make the beds, water the plants, clean up from breakfast, and play a game or two before Heidi woke up.   I was a little mopey doing chores without my sidekick.

Ingrid was happy when I picked her up at lunchtime.  She said she did some transportation cards, scrubbed a table, and ate some carrots.  Ms. Sherri reported that she was a very good worker.  Ingrid has another short transition day tomorrow then starts full-time on Friday.  And then the house is going to be REALLY quiet!
