Cabin 2015

A belated word about our trip to the cabin in August.  We had a great time and I have a million pictures to share with you.

Going to the cabin doesn't suck!  I'm not kidding.  That's the greatest compliment that can be bestowed on a vacation destination by anyone with three children under the age of five.  The kids are so happy to be running around outside all the time.  The lake is perfect for them.  Karl and I enjoy it too.  And after many visits from our kids, Eric and Julia's kids, and now Julia's brother's daughter, the Bradens have everything one could possibly need for small children.  Remember what we packed for 4 days in a beach rental?

Here's what we pack to go to the cabin for a week.

The cabin is Henry's happy place.  Especially now that he can swim like a fish (though he is absolutely forbidden from going down to the lake without a grownup) all we have to do is loosely supervise him and he has the best time ever.  He swims and runs and swims and runs and swims and runs.  And then there's a hammock and trees and a firepit and happy hours and marshmallows.  He literally did not put on shoes for an entire week.

We also let him go on the tube alone this year.  It was terrifying for me but totally awesome for him.  He first went on the big tube with Karl.  While they were riding around, he looked at Karl and said, "This is the best day of my life."

Ingrid didn't swim around the dock much, but she surprised us all by swimming off the boat in the deep part of the lake.  She also spent a lot of time blowing bubbles, talking to the Face Tree, and generally being the cutest person ever.

Heidi looooved the lake.  She splashed and flapped wildly in the water and watched Henry swim around.  We took her on the boat a couple of times but she was wildly unimpressed.  She didn't go into a serious trance like the other kids; she just didn't care.  She also enjoyed her Wisconsin teethers.

Both big kids spent hours foraging for shells in the shallow part of the lake, blowing bubbles, and collecting sticks for the fire.  I love how much time they spend together when we're at the cabin.

Our visit also perfectly coincided with the Perseid meteor shower.   It was a stroke of luck that we were out in the middle of nowhere, with no light pollution, for the event.  Of course the only day it was really cloudy was the peak day, but we did have some fantastic stargazing on the previous night.  It was spectacular.

Look, I caught a meteor!

Eric and Julia couldn't come because they were waiting to have a baby.  Sheesh.  I had to eat all the Tostitos and do the puzzle by myself in Julia's absence.  But it was super fun to be with Dave and Carol on baby watch.

And to be together to toast our new niece!  I will always think of this as the Baby Nona trip, even though she wasn't on the boat with us.

All around, another fantastic trip to the Braden Estate on Red Lake.  I just had pictures printed and the kids have looked at them a million times.  I hope this is a vacation tradition they remember as they grow up.
