Week One

Henry is one week old today!

It's extraordinary to have a little person whose life can be measured in days instead of years. In some ways it feels like he's been with us for ages. The last week has been so intense that it feels much longer than it really was. In just seven days we've gone from labor to birth to recovery to moving home to adventuring out of the house; from serious physical pain to feeling pretty darn good; from no sleep to a pleasant routine; and from complete bewilderment to passing competence (at least with very routine tasks).

Today was his first checkup at the pediatrician. Thankfully, he did not have to get any shots yet. It was mainly just a weight check and a chance for us to be reassured that he is healthy and recovering well from the birth. The little man is looking great. The doctors like to see a baby recover his birth weight by the end of two weeks. Our little tank has already surpassed his birth weight by seven ounces!

For the record books:
Birth weight: 9 lb 15 oz
Weight leaving the hospital: 9 lb 9 oz
Weight at week one: 10 lb 6 oz
That puts him in the 94th percentile for weight!

The visit to the pediatrician was also our first family outing with the baby. Everyone warned us that it would be impossible to get out of the house on time with a baby and we'd be half an hour late to everything. In good Reitz family fashion, we were ready so early that we had time to stop by a friend's house on the way to the doctor, and still got to the appointment 15 minutes early. Henry is going to fit right in here.
