Catching Up

In a fit of extreme optimism, Karl and I decided a few months ago to plan a weekend getaway in honor of our tenth dating-anniversary (ten years!  I know!).  In the years that we've both been working, we've discussed numerous vacations and always wimp out on planning anything because we think something pressing will be happening at work, or it will be a bad time to take (or leave) Henry, or something, or something.  But we finally stopped our hemming and hawing this time and started making plans, with only concession to the reality of our family and professional lives being that we picked a domestic destination instead of taking the trip to Paris that I've been requesting for a decade.  Maybe at 15 years.

So here we are in Key West!  It ended up being an absolutely atrocious time to be away from work, but to hell with it, I'm going on maternity leave in 16 weeks and my level of caring deeply is, shall we say, somewhat lacking.  I was sad and nervous about leaving Henry for four days to begin with, made even worse by having to go to New Jersey for work for two days this week, so that I'll be away from him for six out of seven days.  Oy.  But he seems to be having a magnificent time with Grandma and "Dafe."  He gave them the crook eye when they first showed up, but within half an hour Mom and Dad had become totally superfluous.

That's me, relegated to the back with the dog.

Our hotel is fantastic -- a little boutique place in four Victorian houses with sparkling pools and a lovely garden and a Conde Nast best-hotels ranking.

When I get home, I'm going to make my whole house look like this hotel.  Key West is a decorating revelation for me.  My natural inclination is to beach colors like pale blues, greens, and yellows, but I'm not big on "tropical" motifs or modern spaces.  And I like old houses and elegant furniture, but the deep colors  and excessive foof shown in the Victorian decorating magazines don't suit me either.  Lo and behold -- an island full of elegant Victorian houses!  In pale blues, greens, and yellows!  Furnished with simple antiques!  Perhaps this is exciting to nobody but me, but I'm already planning a number of paint jobs and decorating projects for my maternity leave.

Yesterday we sat by the pool and sunned ourselves all day, leaving the hotel only to walk up Duval Street and eat delicious food.  I had Key Lime pie and Key Lime ice cream in the span of three hours.  [Swoon].  Alas, today we got thunderstorms and torrential downpours, so my tan isn't getting any darker, but sitting on our private patio with a book and watching the water stream through the palm trees is its own kind of relaxing.  Plus Karl and I are getting time to sleep -- oh my god, for ten hours last night -- and sit still and quietly together, which is what we were really after.  And we have wifi, which means I can post about all of our comings and goings for the last month.  It's a good feeling to be able to catch up with ourselves.
