Pregnancy Update
34 weeks today! This is an unofficial milestone because as of this week, they wouldn't send me to the special hospital with the supermax NICU if I went into labor. It's nice to know the kid is basically okay from here on out.
This was also the week that every random person on the street started saying things like, "Any day now, huh?" Thanks. I'm sure you're saying that because my radiant glow just couldn't get any brighter. Not because I'm just that big. It doesn't help that it's 104 degrees outside so I'm basically wearing muumuus to work instead of my usual fitted and tailored garb. I try to sound cheery and not murderous when I reply that I have six weeks to go.
Six weeks seems either terribly long or terrifyingly short, depending on whether we're talking about being pregnant in 100-degree heat or -- oh my god -- having a second child show up here. We realized last week that time was getting short and frantically ordered furniture and fabric and other things to fill out baby sister's room. Henry is now fully moved into his big-boy room (but still in his crib; we decided it wasn't worth messing with a good thing at this point, and his sleeping is very very good) and I'm replacing all the navy and brown striped canvas in the nursery with white eyelet and grosgrain. I'm going to spend this weekend sorting out Henry's baby clothes that are androgynous enough to be reused and washing the things we've received so that I know what else I need to buy. We've recalled all the baby gear that we loaned out to friends in the inter-kid period. Then I think we will be as ready as we can be . . . except for remembering how to take care of a newborn.
So far, baby sister is much calmer than Henry was. He kicked and squirmed so aggressively that people at work gave me funny looks across the conference table because it looked like he was trying to break out through my belly button. Baby sister mostly just lolls around and gives me gentle nudges every couple of hours. It will be interesting to see whether our girl turns into a calmer kid than Henry too.
Speaking of Henry, it's impossible to get him to pose for the camera anymore, but he's never far from the action.
